Lucia Day is celebrated to lighten up one of the darkest days of the year in Sweden.
Lucia and her cohort usually come early in the morning, before dawn, dressed in a long white shift with a red silk band around her waist and a crown of candles perched on her head. Special Lucia songs are sung by a choir and Lucia traditionally serves a breakfast of Glogg (a sweet, mulled red wine served with almonds and raisins), saffron- laced Lucia buns and gingerbread biscuits.
In the past 50 years, the Lucia tradition has grown ever stronger and become a prelude to the Christmas celebration. Lucia processions are popular at day nurseries, schools, places of work, senior citizens´ homes and other homes in greater Stockholm and nation- wide. Sweden´s official Lucia is chosen through a beauty pageant and the winner is crowned at Stockholm´s open- air museum Skansen.
