Gamla Stan is the oldest part of Stockholm with many attractions gathered in a small area. The Kungliga Slottet (royal castle) is a pure example of classic architecture, built betweem 1690 and 1708 by Nicodemus Tessin (junior) and Carl Harleman. The castle with its 608 rooms is no longer inhabited by the royal family, although some rooms are still used for official audiences. If you like men in uniform don´t miss the changing of the guards everyday at noon. But Gamla Stan has much more to offer. For souvenir shops go to Stora Nygatan, the busiest tourist street in Stockholm. If you prefer a quieter shopping street try Österlångatan or one of the many side streets. And if you are not into walking, enjoy a coffee at Stortorget, maybe the nicest place in Stockholm.
